Awakening by Ralph Reed

I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It starts with the history of great changes in the American society and how those changes began.

From the break from British rule, the battle over slavery, Prohibition, Roe v. Wade, and more, Reed details how men and women came to action for a cause.

His challenge in this book is that Americans must stand up for their beliefs and Christian heritage not only as a people but as a nation.

I really enjoyed reading about struggles and hardships that the founding fathers faced as they gave their all to build this wonderful country. I also was captured by how great men took action in the face of opposition for what was right. Our country needs men, RIGHT NOW, that will fight for the rights they adore. Men like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Ronald Reagan, knew the power they had as president and led with conviction and passion.

Sadly, many choices are made for popularity and tyrannical reasons. Reed realizes this and is sounding the alarm to urge Americans to turn back to what has made us a great nation: liberty, personal responsibility, and faith. An awakening can occur if America's people will but rise to the call and defend this great land. Ralph Reed is sounding the call. Will you answer it?

The New Answers Book 4 (Editor: Ken Ham)

Once again the Answers in Genesis (AiG) group has put together a great book for aiding the Christian in defending their faith in the arena of science. The scientific community is livid in ways to undermine or confuse Christians but AiG is at the vanguard of equipping believers with scientific data that proves the existence of a Creator.

As for the book, what is enjoyable is the diversity of the topics discussed. They range from physics, geology, and biology to chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy. Seeing as how God is the cause it is so wonderful to see men of God discover their Creator in all the sciences.

I will say that some of the topics discussed had some very technical language which may make it difficult for some readers to grasp. However, there are many subjects discussed that do not require a elementary understanding of various scientific studies. Thus the book appeals to a broad audience making it an ideal resources.

It does my heart good to see scientists seeking God out and finding out as much as possible about His awesome creative power. This book may be the teaser that prompts many more Christian scientists to seek after their Creator God.

Letting Go of Your Limitations by Sandie Freed

Would you like more of God's power in your life? Are you struggling to have an abundant life? These questions, and more, are what Dr. Freed is addressing in her book: Letting Go of Your Limitations. Dr. Freed gives challenges and encouragement that God is with you and that His power will defeat limitations placed on you by others or yourself.

I found this book to be decent and an easy read. While I agree that our mind and our tongue can put us into more trouble that we should be in, I do disagree that every thought is an evil spirit trying to seduce us. Sometimes I have a bad thought because I am a sinner and need Christ to rid myself of the old man. The thought comes from me; not outside influences. However, I do agree that some thoughts do come from the outside and need to be attacked.

The book did do a good job of attacking some lies about performance and religious "perfectionism". Many would do well to understand that God does not call us to performance but to righteousness and obedience. On this book Dr. Freed and I agree wholeheartedly. That said, this book gets a three stars out of a five star rating.

The Dude's Guide to Manhood by Darrin Patrick

The first that hit me was the that one of the forewords was written by Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. That in, and of, itself is a reason to get this book.

All quacking aside, this is an amazing book on manhood. I have read several books in the recent months on manhood and this by far has been the best I've read.

The book goes into twelve characteristics of what a Biblical man should be. Some of the topics deal with work, family, God, sex, contentment, and connecting. Men need to understand that we are created for a purpose. Masculinity reveals God in some facet provided that masculinity is rooted in devotion to God.

What Patrick has done is put into plain English what a man is; not what he thinks it is. There is a difference that if not

discovered will lead to an unsatisfied life and a yearning for more.

I really enjoyed the chapters on family, fatherhood, and being a wife-loving husband. Too many man see these responsibilities as secondary to work and hobbies.  Patrick puts the proper perspective in print. Do what God wants from you; not what you want for you.

Every man should read this book. I repeat: EVERY MAN SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. Take my advice and just do it. You'll be glad you did.

Every Man's Bible, NLT

I picked this Bible up a few months ago and really like the study helps and thoughts for men. It really takes Scriptural teachings and how a man is to respond to it. It is also a great Bible for personal devotions as the topics in the helps really challenge a man to be what God would like Him to be.

Masculinity is in desperate need of reclaiming its foundational sense of being. Many men are lost today and have no clue as to where to find themselves. Society and culture dictate that which can be contrary to God and His Word. This Bible does an excellent job of bridging the gap between what a Biblical man should be and how God wants him to get there.

I would recommend that this Bible be given to young men entering into their college years and also as a gift to those in men's ministry. However, I would hold off for a bit until the updated one arrives later in the year. I've been in touch with Tyndale and the current Bible is the 1996 edition of the NLT. They have since updated this translation but the Every Man's Bible has yet to incorporate the newer edition. I was told that was happening this year. Wait for the new edition. It will be well worth it.

When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert

When I heard about this book from a review by a friend I thought it would be a great resource to have. I was right. This book is a great tool on how to properly use aid when dealing with the poor. The solution is not to throw money at the problem but rather find out what is causing the poverty.

Corbett and Fikkert do an excellent job of giving their foundation for helping the hurting: Jesus. Jesus came to earth and helped the hurting. By His example we should do the same. However, there is a way to do so without making this worse than before.

The first thing is find out what type of poverty it is. Is it poverty by tragedy (hurricane, tsunami, medical reasons), economic environment (low income job, high cost of living) or lack of initiative? What the authors have done is show that each situation is not the same. It is the proverbial feed a man to fish, but make sure that there is a river in which to fish.

What was addressed, that never dawned on me, was the mental and psychological battering that the poor are assaulted with that a middle income earner does not face. Thoughts of worthlessness, stupidity, hopelessness, and others plague the poor. These items must be addressed but the solution is not always to give financial aid. What then is the proper response? That depends on the cause.

Sometimes the proper response is to give money but that such situations needs to be examined carefully. It may only be a one time need (i.e. car trouble, damages because of natural disasters, etc) and such needs may be solved by money. However, what about the situations like poor education, loss of a job,  etc.? Giving money will not fix these problems but it is often used because it is one of the easiest.

This gets to the heart of the book: overcoming poverty requires a long term approach. It demands time, energy, relationships, and perseverance. It requires getting to know the people who make up the poor, understanding their fears, dreams, thoughts, and worldviews. This is how to help without hurting: empowerment.

This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone involved in ministering to those in impoverished environments. I highly recommend that every pastor, homeless shelter director, and missions organization get a copy. In fact, get more than one so you can lend out a copy or two. It will be well worth it.

Leadership RE:Vision by Jim Seybert

I've been reading this book for over six months now and its simple, but powerful, sections are timely for leaders.What is especially nice is that it is Biblically based but not sermon-like in its content. A leader can spend a few minutes reading a section but spend a great deal of time mediating on areas that are applicable. Leaders would do well to get a copy of this book.

Exploring Christian Theology, Volume 3

I know that most theology books can bore the average reader. Terms and phrases, ideologies and stances, and to make matters worse, use of Latin. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good Latin phrase but not entire sentences or paragraphs.

However, in their book Holsteen and Svigel have done something quite remarkable: they made theology understandable and enjoyable.

The first section deals with how various denominations came to be and the teachings of those denominations. The book gives a brief history starting with the early church, moving through the medieval times, and then to the present. It sets a good foundation for the reasons for differences of Biblical interpretation and how those differences formulated the various church denominations we know today.

What is exceptionally done is that the authors make no claim as to who was/is right and who was/is not. The facts are presented fairly and honestly which allows the reader to get an understanding of Christendom and its growth. I found myself seeing connections that make a lot of sense and appreciating the discomfort that the church has gone through during her development.

The second half is on the end times or eschatology. This is where the book does a masterful job. It explains different viewpoints and how those viewpoints came to be. Again, no prejudices are stated and the reader is allowed to see the teachings as they are.

A very condensed, but well developed book. 

Confession of a Boy-Crazy Girl by Paula Hendricks

I can image what some of you may be thinking, "isn't this a book for girls? Why is a guy reading it?" It is true that I am a guy, I am married, I am not a teenager, and I am not boy-crazy. (My wife affirms all the aforementioned)

Paula is a good friend of mine and has been for about seven years. We used to attend a discussion group about the application of our Christian faith in today's world. To hear that she was writing a book was a joy and I really wanted to read it.

That said, here is a guy's perspective on Confessions of a Boy-Crazy Girl.

The first thing I noticed was the openness that Paula has on the pages. This was not a do/do not type of book. It was Paula's story and what she learned along the way.

From early in life to the present day Paula shares struggles, fears, sins, but also joys, growth, and a desire to be Christ-like. What I really appreciate is that Paula is not shy about calling sins in her life what they are: lust, envy, jealousy, fear, etc. Her heart, felt throughout the book, is that girls find their true worth, value, and acceptance in Christ. These are lessons that we all should learn regardless of our sex and age.

Another trait running through the pages is passion. Passion to really know God, his son Jesus, and what it means to be a woman who is free in Christ. So much of our culture demands that women dress a certain way, have certain measurements, have flawless features, and that is true femininity. WRONG!!!

Paula makes this very clear: acceptance cannot be found in that which will fade away. Beauty is not skin deep, looks are. Beauty comes from loving your Creator and how He created you. Easy? No. Worth it? Absolutely! Paula went through much pain to understand this and shares as much in this journal-like book.

Thus, as a youth pastor, I HIGHLY recommend this book not only to girls struggling with boy-craziness but also to those of us who will counsel these young women. Their lives and souls are potentially at stake. To not combat the lies of our culture is to do them an egregious error.
